The short version
May and September–October. Clear desert light, warm days and cool evenings, outside the worst of the sandstorms and the summer crowds. Avoid China's national holidays in early May and early October.
Month by month
- March–April — the main sandstorm season across the Hexi Corridor. Flights can be delayed and the Mogao Caves may close on high-wind days. Some boutique hotels are just reopening.
- May — our favorite month. Days in the mid-70s °F, low rain, long golden evenings on the dunes. Arrive after the May Day holiday (May 1–5).
- June–August — hot (often 90°F+ by day) and the busiest season for domestic travel; Mogao tickets are hardest to get.
- September–October — grape harvest, softer light, cool nights. Avoid Golden Week (October 1–7).
- November–February — cold and very quiet. Some desert hotels, including Jangala (open March to October), close for winter.
Planning around the season
- Pick your window, then book the hotel — small desert hotels fill months ahead.
- Book Mogao tickets the moment they are released (about a month ahead).
- Time the Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Lake for after 6 pm, when it is cooler and quieter.
- Keep one flexible day: if wind rises, outdoor days can swap.
