The short version
The Mogao Caves are visited by timed, real-name ticket only. Tickets are tied to the passport you book with, the visit starts at the Digital Exhibition Center rather than at the cliff, and in May and September–October the best time slots go first. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Ticket types
- Standard (A) ticket — two films at the Digital Exhibition Center, then a shuttle to the cliff and a guided route through about eight caves, chosen on the day for conservation reasons. Foreign-language guided slots are available.
- Emergency (B) ticket — released when standard tickets run out in peak season; about four caves and no films. A fallback, not a plan.
- Special caves — a small number of exceptional caves outside the standard route, visited in very small groups for an additional fee. Which caves are open, and how they are sold, changes through the year; treat them as limited and confirm the current arrangement with the Dunhuang Academy when you book.
How foreign visitors book
The official channel is the Dunhuang Academy's Mogao Caves booking service on WeChat, which accepts foreign passports. The name must match your passport exactly — passports are checked at the entrance. The Academy has stated that no third party is authorized to sell tickets, so be wary of resellers.
On the day
- Go to the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center on the edge of Dunhuang city — not to the cave site, which has no ticket office.
- Arrive about 30 minutes before your slot with the passport you booked with.
- After the films, the official shuttle takes you to the cliff. Photography is not allowed inside the caves; bags and cameras are stored before entering.
How to plan Dunhuang around Mogao
Fix the Mogao date first and build the rest of the week around it. The western sights (Yangguan, Yumen Pass, Yardang) and the eastern Yulin Grottoes are each a long day by road, so give them their own days — and keep a spare day in case wind or sand closes the caves.
Questions
Can foreigners book Mogao Caves tickets?
Yes. Foreign passport holders can book through the Dunhuang Academy's official Mogao Caves booking service on WeChat. The name must match the passport exactly.
How far ahead should I book the Mogao Caves?
As soon as your dates are fixed. Tickets are released roughly a month ahead, and in May and September–October the standard tickets for popular time slots go quickly.
What is the difference between A and B tickets at Mogao?
The A ticket includes two films and about eight caves with a guide. The B (emergency) ticket is released when A tickets sell out and covers about four caves without the films.
Can I take photos inside the Mogao Caves?
No. Photography is not permitted inside the caves, and bags and cameras are stored before you enter.
Rather have it all arranged?
Flights, visa, Mogao tickets, a bilingual guide-interpreter and a private car — one private proposal within 48 hours.
