Visa rules change often. This page reflects the rules as we understand them in November 2026 — always confirm with the Chinese embassy or consulate, or China's National Immigration Administration, before booking non-refundable flights.
The short version
US citizens are not on China's unilateral visa-free list. For a normal holiday flying from the US to China and back, plan on a tourist (L) visa — usually issued to Americans as a 10-year multiple-entry visa. The 240-hour visa-free transit is a genuine option only if you continue from China to a third country or region.
240-hour visa-free transit: when it works
- You must be in transit: arriving from one country or region and leaving for a different one (Hong Kong, Macau, Japan or Korea count). A US → China → US round trip does not qualify.
- You need a confirmed onward ticket, with date and seat, leaving within 240 hours (counted from 00:00 the day after arrival).
- You must enter and leave through designated ports and stay within the participating provinces. Gansu — home to Dunhuang and the Mogao Caves — is not among them, and nor is Tibet.
The L visa
- Complete the online application form (COVA) and upload your photo.
- Book an appointment at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center covering your state and submit your passport with the supporting documents (itinerary, hotel bookings or invitation).
- Allow several weeks for appointments and processing; expedited service exists but is not guaranteed.
Once issued, a 10-year visa covers future trips too — and it removes all the routing rules, so you can fly direct round trips and visit any open province.
Which one for a Dunhuang trip?
The L visa. Dunhuang is in Gansu, outside the transit zones, and most Americans fly a round trip. Start the application three to four months before you travel.
